What are the Properties of 40MnCr5 Alloy Steel?

Properties of 40-MnCr5 is as follows:-

  • Hardness (After Heat Treatment): Can reach up to 55 HRC (Rockwell Hardness)
  • Tensile Strength: ~850-1100 MPa (after quenching and tempering)
  • Yield Strength: ~600 MPa
  • Good Wear Resistance due to chromium content
  • Moderate Weldability (requires preheating to avoid cracking)
  • Good Machinability (in softened condition)

Heat Treatment

  • Normalizing: 850–880°C, then air cooling
  • Hardening: 820–860°C, followed by oil or water quenching
  • Tempering: 540–680°C to achieve desired mechanical properties
